Combination Prints

In this workshop you will explore the key technical aspects of general printmaking to allow for the creative development of ideas.

The workshop is designed to inform printmakers about the basic key elements of printing that apply to most processes. This will allow the individual artist the creative flexibility to move comfortably between processes in the development of their work.

The workshop will cover:

  • Selecting the appropriate paper and preparation
  • Systems of registration
  • Types and nature of inks for screen, relief and intaglio

Starting with a screen printed textural background you will overprint collagraph using relief, intaglio or both (whichever is most appropriate to your individual work).

Day 1

  • brief talk about papers, registration systems and inks.
  • Screen print pre-prepared textural backgrounds.
  • Preparing of 2 collagraph plates

Day 2

  • Overprinting collagraph plates, relief or intaglio
  • Methods of applying ink
  • Developing ideas

You will need to bring

  • some textural materials and line drawings (maximum A4) that can be cut, carved or used to create a collagraph plate.
  • Enthusiasm and lots of ideas

Experimental screenprinting with Bonnie Craig

Experiment with colour, shape, composition, texture and pattern in this two-day screen-printing workshop with artist Bonnie Craig.

The workshop will take a creative and playful approach to screen-printing using techniques including layering, masking, overprinting and collage to create unique and expressive prints. Participants will be encouraged to use the screen as an image-making and mark-making tool, and to explore screen-printing as an experimental process.

Participants will bring their own ideas and inspiration to the workshop and will have the opportunity to work both individually and collaboratively. You’ll take home a collection of your own prints, and some collaborative pieces that you’ve worked on with other people.

Screen-printing experience is not needed, but please bring an open mind and be ready to play!

Bonnie Craig is an artist who works predominantly with pattern. Based in Lancaster in north-west England, she has an MA in Surface Pattern and works on public and community art commissions, solo and group exhibitions, and workshops and collaborative artworks.

She has run workshops with organisations such as the Wellcome Collection, Lancashire Science Festival, Light Up Lancaster and Art Market York and has completed residencies with Art Gene, In Certain Places, the Little Beach Hut of Dreams and Artlab at the University of Central Lancashire.

She fell in love with screen-printing four years ago, drawn to the simplicity and speed of the process. She tends to produce one-off screen-prints, as opposed to editions, and often starts work with no set plan – making the most of chance and intuition in her printmaking process.

Reduction Linocut with Ian Phillips

On this two day course you will learn the process of reduction linocut under the guidance of a knowledgeable and sympathetic professional printmaker. The tutor, Ian Phillips, has been working in Lino for over twenty years and has a lot of experience surprising linocut beginners with the quality of their first print. Ian can also help those with a bit more experience improve their technique and outcome. The course will look at techniques, materials and tools as well as turning the seemingly complicated process of producing your own colour reduction print from one sheet of lino into manageable steps.

Please bring any pictures you find inspiring, a small image you would like to try producing as a linocut (Roughly 16 cm x 24 cm) and some enthusiasm. All materials and tools will be provided.

Ian Phillips studied Illustration at Leicester Polytechnic before working as a freelance editorial illustrator in London. While working on commissions he taught himself to print reduction linocut and in 2000 moved to Wales to concentrate on becoming a better printmaker and work in the landscape. Starting with the Dyfi Valley Way project in 2002, he now specialises in producing consecutive series of prints taken from drawings done while walking long distance footpaths or exploring particular areas of scenic beauty. Usually in Wales and but occasionally further afield.

Saline sulphate and electro-etching with Don Braisby

This workshop will teach two etching processes that can be used to etch at home or in a classroom situation, these are saline sulphate and electro-etching.

Both processes have been described as being ‘safe etching’ however in this workshop we will focus on their potential for alternative mark making rather than on their non-toxic credentials. Don Braisby who is teaching the workshop is completing his doctoral thesis on electro-etching.

Workshops aim:

  • Provide a simple introduction to the theory and practice of electro- etching.
  • Introduce the equipment needed for electro-etching and plating, how to set it up and use it safely.
  • Creative plate making, resists and stop outs
  • Preparation and etching of plates.

Objectives:

  • Participants will have gained a working knowledge of saline sulphate and making and proofing at least one plate in each process.
  • Introduced to electroforming and electrotyping as a potential process in sculpture and printmaking.
  • provide feedback for use in research.

This is an 8 week workshop for anyone who would like to try printmaking for the first time or refresh their printmaking skills in a professional studio environment. The aim of the workshop is to give you a series of practical taster sessions on a variety of creative printmaking techniques.

Over the 8 weeks there will be sessions on each of the following printmaking processes: relief, intaglio, collagraph, mono and screen. You will be taught by one of the Regional Print Centre’s Print Facilitators who have a wealth of printmaking knowledge and understanding.

All materials and equipment will be provided and participants are encouraged to explore their own subject and creative influences throughout the workshop sessions.

Participants who complete the 8 week programme can then progress to our Focus on Printmaking Workshops and Visiting Artists Workshops. You can also use the Regional Print Centre’s open access facilities to develop their work and understanding.

If you have ever fancied having a go at printmaking this is an ideal starting point. You can also visit the printmaking studio, see the facilities, meet our studio members and see their work.

Expressive Letterpress with David Armes (11/04 – 13/04/2017)

You will spend three days learning how the letterpress process can be used to create vibrant, graphic prints that look towards both typography and other printmaking media. Using the studio’s wood type collection, you will learn how to set wood type, lock up a forme and operate the press. You will be using the studio’s Thompson proofing press which David Armes will demonstrate using some examples of the type of work you will be focussing on.

Previous letterpress experience would be useful but is not essential.

David will explain and demonstrate the techniques you’ll be employing, including registration on presses without grippers/gauges, pressure printing, using white spirit/other materials to break up/interfere with ink areas and how you can experiment with relief surfaces. You will leave with a small edition of hand-inked prints and hopefully plenty of ideas about your next steps.

Considering type as image, you will think creatively about design and carefully plan out each print in three layers:

  • Background
  • Main/large text in colour(s)
  • Graphic information printed in black

In advance, you need to think about the words you want to use. Pick three that are important to you – these will be the main/larger text in layer 2. It could be a slogan, an advert for an event or even just your name.

Please think beyond the usual ‘Keep Calm & Carry On’ posters! You should also consider how you want to incorporate letterpress into your existing work, whether you’re already a printmaker, are involved in graphic design or just want to explore a new technique.
