Creating Fantastical Landscapes in Colour with Rhi Moxon

2 day workshop

Cost £100 members. £145 non-members.

This 2-day workshop is an opportunity to experiment with contrasting processes to create striking, multi layered colourful screen-printed landscapes. Looking at shape and form, we will create depth through layering and build up of texture. There will be opportunity to play around with colour overlap; a technique in screenprinting used to give the illusion that more colours are printed than actually are, by creating third and even fourth colours where areas overlap. We will look at negative space and how to use the background colour of a print to weave space through an image and digital techniques which can help control this effect.

There will be a lot of experimentation with mark making and ‘loosening up’ the drawing arm as a way of letting go and creating more freeing marks at the beginning of the design process. We will experiment with collage, scanned textures, and papercuts and then combine this with drawing directly onto acetate before bringing this distinct styles together to create our transparencies for a multi-layered screenprint.

Looking at folk art traditions, we will explore the use of primary colours and bold shapes in the work to create bold, striking prints. We will also look at motifs and symbolism used in European and Asian Folk Art traditions and how to bury layers of meaning within multi-layered screen prints.

There will be an opportunity to play around with the placement of colour layers to create a small set of mono-screen prints, and learn the different effects created by varying the order in which we place down colour; blue over red, red over yellow, etc. There will be an opportunity to make several A3 sized prints, please feel free to bring drawings or ideas to work from or equally respond to the processes!

The aim of this two day workshop is to empower people to be more playful and experimental with screenprint by understanding the basics and the pitfalls when starting out, so that they can go beyond these limitations and exploit the many possibilities and capabilities of the form. By the end of the two days everyone will have enough basic skills and know how to take their own ideas forward.

All essential equipment and paper will be provided but do bring any equipment you already use and any spare prints (if you have some).
