Thursday 28th – Friday 29th July 2016
Spend two days with tutor David Armes learning how letterpress can be used to create vibrant, graphic prints. Using the studio’s wood type collection and the Thompson Gem proofing press, you will learn how to set wood type, lock up a forme and operate the press. Considering type as image, you will think creatively about design before exploring inking and printing techniques to create a small edition of hand-inked prints. Previous letterpress experience would be useful but is not essential.
David is a letterpress artist and printmaker specialising in graphic, text-based work that seeks relevant ways for letterpress printing to be applied to contemporary arts and crafts. He also works to commission and on residencies and in 2015 spent three months travelling across the USA visiting letterpress printmakers and studios on a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust fellowship. In summer 2016 he will be artist-in-residence at Huddersfield Art Gallery.
