Frances Carlile is a sculptor and printmaker based in Ludlow. She was born in Scotland and lived in Wales for 25 years. She studied Fine Art at Camberwell in London in 1992 and completed an MA in Sculpture at Chelsea College of Art in 1995. She started making prints at the Regional Print Centre in 2010. She has exhibited widely in England and Wales.
Her print practice originally grew out of drawings that were made in parallel to sculpture.
She uses print to explore notions of quietness, solitude and imaginary space. Winter is the context for the work. Within a landscape of winter trees suggestions of narrative occur. The landscape becomes re ordered to create a still and separate arena. Memories of fairy tales and childhood books inform the work.
